Polish choir Halka in Leicester and its activities

Polish choir Halka in Leicester, is a small choir of around 30 voices. It was founded in 1953 and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2003 with a gala concert with the participation of other Polish choirs affiliated to The Association of Polish Choirs in the Midlands. Click here for more information on the celebrations on the BBC website. You can also listen to an interview with the choir's Conductor and the choir's music.

The choir's activities aim to enhance local Polish communities by actively supporting traditions and customs as well as to entertain and promote Polish music and song to the audiences in the UK. The choir has a fairly eclectic repertoire with interest in both, predominantly Polish, secular and religious music.

Principal involvement of the choir is within the Polish community in the City of Leicester but it has also forged links with other smaller Polish communities elsewhere in England, in particular those scattered around Leicester for example, Melton Mowbray, Loughborough, Rugby etc.

The choir regularly performs at Sunday mass at the Polish Catholic church in Leicester and takes part in various celebrations of Polish heritage and history in the Polish Community Centre. The choir’s engagements outside the Polish communities have traditionally centred on charitable entertainment and cultural exchange events with performances held at diverse venues ranging from hospitals and clubs to concert halls.

The choir rehearsals are held on Tuesday evening, 20.00 – 22.00 hrs at the Polish Community Centre in Wakerley Road

Interested singers of all voices are invited to email contact the choir Conductor at: azc.poltrans@ntlworld.com
