DRIVES US TO PROMOTE IT TO

History

The Song and Dance Troupe, based in Leicester, was originally founded in August 1980 by Ania Krupska, who continues to be the troupe artistic director and choreographer.

The name of the group comes from the pre-war Polish region of that name, which is now part of Belarus, and many émigré Polish families from that Region settled in the East Midlands after the 2nd World War.

Polesie have performed over the years at many large theatres in England and also for local charities, community concerts, garden fetes and carnivals. In 1993 the troupe performed in Poland and had the honour of meeting the Polish Primate, Cardinal Joseph Glemp. In June 2000, Polesie performed at a Charity Concert in Mansfield in the presence of the first lady of Poland, Jolanta Kwasniewska.

Polesie took part in the 1st Festival of Polish Folklore Groups in Great Britain in 1993 and have continued to participate in all the bi-annual festivals since then (3 in Leamington Spa and 1 in Manchester). Each festival attracts an audience of approx. 1,700 people, who are entertained by between 300-350 dancers and musicians from all over the UK.

Members of the Troupe including the Artistic Director have attended 4 week dance tuition courses for instructors that are held in Lublin, Poland and have also participated in the International Festival for émigré Polish Folklore Groups, which is held in Rzeszow, Poland every 3 years.
